Lipsu – winter driving route planner
Lipsu helps you choose a car route with less exposure to ice, slippery roads, heavy snowfall, strong gusts combined with precipitation, and driving in darkness. It covers Finland, Sweden, Norway and Switzerland.
Plan a routeStart, destination and time
Type a place, town or ski resort, or use your device location. The swap arrow flips start and destination. Choose a departure or arrival target within the next 24 hours; the slider shows daylight, twilight and night. Recently used places are remembered on this device only. A link with ?from=…&to=… plans straight away, departing now.
Every route alternative
Each corridor Google suggests gets its own card, and where needed a detour around a dangerous stretch is added. Cards are ordered from lowest to highest risk and show the road name, distance, driving time, difference from the normal route and time in darkness. The coloured bar shows red, yellow and green kilometres; the longest route fills the full bar. You can also pick a route by tapping a grey alternative on the map.
How risk is assessed
Routes are compared by risk-minutes: driving time weighted by road-condition severity and darkness. Ice and heavy snow are red; slippery roads and heavy rain are yellow. Gusts of 16 m/s or more together with snowfall or heavy rain turn conditions red in every country. A slower route is chosen only when it clearly cuts risk. The app never suggests waiting, because ice and snow rarely clear quickly.
Forecasts, cameras and traffic notices
Road-weather forecasts come from Fintraffic, Trafikverket and Statens vegvesen; in Switzerland, and wherever a local road forecast is missing, MET Norway (Yr) weather forecasts are used. Forecast points are anchored to roadside weather stations along the route first, always including the highest point. Each point's popup shows passage time, conditions, temperature, precipitation and gusts. Road closures and snow-chain requirements have their own map signs; a closed road is never used when an open route exists.
Selected route details
Below the selected route you see departure, arrival and an hourly rain and snow chart; tap a bar to see the nearest larger town. Press and hold the selected card to view the road camera closest to the riskiest spot with its conditions; on release the map zooms there. Open the route in Google Maps or Apple Maps, including any detour waypoint.
Forecasts, camera images and journey times may be incomplete or outdated. A green route does not guarantee slip-free roads. Check official warnings, obey road signs and adapt your driving to actual conditions. Your navigation app may recalculate the route.
